Bible Verses About Strength

The Bible talks about strength most often to people who have run out of their own. It rarely means grit or self-reliance; it usually means a strength that is given: one that arrives in weakness, one that is renewed after it has been spent, one that belongs to God and is lent. These are the verses read to someone who is worn down by caregiving, illness, a long season, a hard job. Keep the one that meets you where you are tired.

Scripture on strength

King James Version. The same wording Holy Root serves by default.

  1. Isaiah 40:31

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Strength here is renewed, not manufactured, and the condition is waiting on the Lord, which is closer to trust than to effort.

  2. Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Read in context (Paul is describing contentment in plenty and in want), it is less a promise of unlimited capacity and more of sufficiency for whatever comes.

  3. 2 Corinthians 12:9

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

The one verse that says weakness is where God's strength shows most clearly: not a thing to hide but the place it works.

  4. Nehemiah 8:10

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Said to people weeping over how far they had fallen short. Joy is named as the source of strength, not its reward.

  5. Psalm 46:1

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Refuge is where you go; strength is what you are given there. Both are described as already present in the trouble.

  6. Isaiah 41:10

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

"I will strengthen thee" is one of four promises in the verse: strength, presence, help, and being held up.

  7. Ephesians 6:10

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

Note "in the Lord" and "his might": the strength being commanded is borrowed, not summoned from within.

  8. Psalm 28:7

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth.”

The order runs: trusted, helped, rejoiced. Strength and help come before the joy, not after it.

  9. Psalm 73:26

“My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”

It admits the failing outright, "my flesh and my heart faileth", and then names what holds when they do not.

  10. Habakkuk 3:19

“The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.”

Written at the end of a book of hard questions. The strength described lets you keep moving over difficult ground, not avoid it.

  11. 2 Timothy 4:17

“Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me.”

Paul's account of a moment when everyone else had left. "Stood with me" and "strengthened me" arrive together.

Questions

People also ask

What is the best Bible verse about strength?

Isaiah 40:31 ("they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength") and 2 Corinthians 12:9 ("my strength is made perfect in weakness") are the two most cited. One is about strength being renewed after it runs out; the other is about God's strength being clearest exactly where you are weakest.

What Bible verse says God gives us strength?

Isaiah 41:10 ("I will strengthen thee"), Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me"), and Psalm 28:7 ("The Lord is my strength and my shield") all state it directly.

What does the Bible say about being weak?

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 is the clearest passage: God tells Paul "my strength is made perfect in weakness," and Paul concludes "when I am weak, then am I strong." Weakness is treated as the setting for God's power, not a disqualification.
