Bible Verses About Anxiety

Anxiety rarely announces itself. It is the tightness before a conversation you have been avoiding, the 3 a.m. loop of everything that could go wrong, the low hum under an ordinary Tuesday. Scripture does not pretend the fear is unreasonable; it keeps pointing past it, to a God who is near, who carries what you cannot, and who asks for today only. These are the verses most often read aloud when someone is anxious: in a sermon, a hospital room, a small group. They are gathered here so you can find them, and so that the next time one of them lands in a service you have a way to keep it.

Scripture on anxiety

King James Version. The same wording Holy Root serves by default.

  1. Philippians 4:6-7

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

"Be careful for nothing" is old English for "be anxious about nothing." The instruction is not to stop feeling it but to move it into prayer, with thanks, and the promised result is a peace that outruns explanation.

  2. 1 Peter 5:7

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Short enough to hold onto in a hard moment. The reason given is not that the care is small, but that He is paying attention.

  3. Matthew 6:34

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

Most anxiety is spent on a tomorrow that has not arrived. Jesus draws the line at today and says today is enough to be getting on with.

  4. John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Spoken to disciples hours before the crucifixion. A peace offered precisely when circumstances gave no reason for it.

  5. Isaiah 41:10

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Four promises stacked in one verse: presence, strength, help, and being held up. The command "fear not" comes with the resources to obey it.

  6. Psalm 55:22

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

"Cast" is deliberate and physical: you put the weight down. "Sustain" is the ongoing part: He keeps carrying it after the first relief wears off.

  7. Psalm 94:19

“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”

A verse for a racing mind. It does not silence the thoughts; it names a comfort that meets them where they are loudest.

  8. Matthew 11:28

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The invitation is open to the exhausted specifically. Rest here is a gift, not a reward for calming down first.

  9. Psalm 46:1

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

"Very present" means not a help that arrives later, but one already here in the trouble itself.

  10. Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Anxiety often comes from trying to think your way to certainty. This verse relocates the weight-bearing from your understanding to His.

  11. 2 Timothy 1:7

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

"A sound mind" is the phrase that speaks to anxiety: clarity and steadiness are named as part of what God gives.

  12. Psalm 34:4

“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

A testimony, not a formula, but the shape of it is worth noticing: sought, heard, delivered.

Questions

People also ask

What is the best Bible verse for anxiety?

Philippians 4:6-7 is the passage most often turned to, because it gives both an instruction (bring it to God in prayer, with thanksgiving) and a promise (a peace that "passeth all understanding"). 1 Peter 5:7, "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you", is the shortest to memorise for a hard moment.

Does the Bible say not to worry?

Jesus addresses worry directly in Matthew 6:25-34, and Paul writes "Be careful for nothing" (Philippians 4:6). The consistent message is not that anxiety is a sin to feel ashamed of, but that it is a weight meant to be handed over rather than carried alone.

What Psalm is good for anxiety?

Psalm 46 ("God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble"), Psalm 55:22 ("Cast thy burden upon the Lord"), and Psalm 94:19 ("In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul") are the ones most often read when someone is anxious.
